At the end of our galley kitchen is a small laundry closet, and I've been making it my mission to make it as beautiful as possible. My game plan for this laundry closet makeover is to turn this doorway into an arch, and add a "pocket door" (technically hung as a barn door). The door I found is covered in windows so I knew I needed to make this laundry closet more aesthetic.
Here is where we started- a solid wood cabinet hung over the dryer on the right, and wire shelves hung over the washer on the left. We went back and forth on if we wanted to get a new front loader set so we could save some space, and I'm glad that's what we ended up doing! During this makeover, I also refinished a trash can cabinet (that my dad built when I was a kid!) to help hide this trash can, but that's another post for another day.
I contemplated if I should just repaint the closet, hang wallpaper, or apply roman clay. We used roman clay on the fireplace built ins last year and I love how it looks, so I decided to use it in here too!
When you apply roman clay, typically you would prime the walls first, but the color in this room was almost identical to the color of the roman clay, so I decided to skip that step. I love how it adds some extra contrast to the clay. After you apply your first coat, sand it down (I used a 220 hand sanding block), apply your second coat, and then sand again. I used the color Thumper by Portola Paints again and absolutely love how it turned out!
I wanted to add crown moulding to the top of the closet, but the room had these weird corner pieces, so I used a Dewalt multi tool to cut the tops off.
I hung the trim with a Dewalt cordless nailer, primed it, then painted it the same color that was previously on the walls (Chatroom by Sherwin Williams).
I'm so glad we decided to switch our washer and dryer to front loaders! It saves so much space.
